Round one winners advance and prize announced for tournament champion

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Kim LaSata announced on Monday the schools that have advanced to the “Sweet 16” round of the 2019 Southwest Michigan Spirit Tournament.

“This year’s spirit tournament is off to a great start,” said LaSata, R-Bainbridge Township. “I appreciate all of the photos submitted by students, parents, alumni and members of all 31 competing communities. You truly have great school spirit, and I look forward to seeing the tournament unfold — keep those photos coming!”

The schools moving on to the next round are as follows: Niles, Countryside, Burr Oak, Michigan Lutheran, Bridgman, Howardsville Christian, Lake Michigan Catholic, Sturgis, Benton Harbor, Marcellus, River Valley, St. Joseph, Coloma, Three Rivers, Grace Christian and Berrien Springs.

The round of 16 will compete through noon on Friday, March 29. The entire competition will end at noon on Friday, April 19 and the champion will be awarded like previous years. The tournament began with 31 area high schools competing in four brackets.

This year, AT&T Pioneers has graciously offered to donate $250 to the tournament winner.

“We appreciate their commitment to education and are excited to see which school shows the most school spirit in the coming weeks,” LaSata said.

Residents are reminded that there are several ways to earn points for their favorite school, including voting in online polls or submitting unique photos about their school.
