Southwest Michigan Spirit Tournament returns Feb. 28

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Kim LaSata announced Tuesday the popular Southwest Michigan Spirit Tournament is back for another year, with the competition beginning Monday, Feb. 28 at noon.

The tournament will end Friday, April 1, and the winner will be announced Monday, April 4.

“The Southwest Michigan Spirit Tournament is meant to bring together students and their communities to show support for our local schools,” said LaSata, R-Niles. “Over the years, the response to this competition has been phenomenal. It’s a great way for students and alumni to put their school spirit on display and show everyone what makes their school great!”

Thirty-one area high schools eligible for the tournament will be divided into four brackets, like in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The schools will compete in a single-elimination bracket contest with those earning the most points advancing to the next round each week.

Voting will take place at and

On Facebook, each round matchup will feature a graphic of the competing schools’ mascots. To vote, participants will “react” to the original posted graphic with a “Haha” to vote for one school or a “Wow” to vote for the other. Each graphic will indicate the required method to use for each school.

The second way to participate will be on LaSata’s website. Each week a new poll will be posted, allowing participants to select their favorite school in each round’s matchups.

At the end of each round, the votes from Facebook and the website poll will be combined and winning schools will advance to the next round until a winner is determined.
